5-MeO-DMT

What is 5-MeO-DMT?

5-MeO-DMT is a psychoactive chemical found most notably in Colorado River toad (also known as Sonoran Desert toad) skin and venom. It is sometimes referred to as “bufo” in reference to the toad’s genus and one of its given scientific names, Bufo alvarius (though it appears its official scientific name is actually Incilius alvarius).

5-MeO-DMT is the primary psychoactive agent in the toad’s skin and venom. It can be synthesized and consumed in purely chemical form, though certain practitioners claim the toad’s venom provides a different, more organic experience than synthesized 5-MeO-DMT. This may be because of the small presence of bufotenin, another psychoactive chemical present in the toad (this is also subject to debate). Some, however, advocate for exclusive use of synthetic 5-MeO-DMT to avoid problematic toad exploitation.

Though toad licking is a real, optionally means of consumption (yes, like in Family Guy), toad venom is typically vaporized and inhaled.

The 5-MeO-DMT experience is relatively short, lasting between 7 minutes to 2 hours depending on dosage and means of consumption. Described as extremely potent and dissociative, 5-MeO-DMT is supposedly a less visual experience than DMT.

Fun fact: Philadelphia-based psych rock band Bardo Pond entitled their 1995 album Bufo Alvarius in allusion to the toad that produces this substance (also see Amanita Muscaria).

Is 5-MeO-DMT legal in Canada?

5-MeO-DMT is legal for personal use and possession in Canada. Though sale, distribution, and other activities involving the substance are illegal under Canadian federal law.

5-MeO-DMT is not a listed substance under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. As such, personal possession does not appear to be subject to criminal prohibition.

However, 5-MeO-DMT (particularly in synthetic chemical form) will be subject to regulation under the Food and Drugs Act, meaning unauthorized sale or distribution for human or animal use will not be in compliance with Canadian law.

Medical or Therapeutic Use?

Some studies suggest 5-MeO-DMT may be helpful for addressing anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

Toad venom is dangerous in high doses. It is venom, after all.
